10 ways to support a healthy gut with essential oils

Ever heard the saying your gut is your ‘second brain?’. Well, that’s because it truly is.

Gut health is so important to living a long, healthy and happy life. The enteric nervous system that is your gut, contains some 100 million neurons and measures about nine meters in length, so you could say looking after it is essential!

One of the best ways to support a healthy gut and maintain overall digestive health is with nature’s wonder workers – essential oils. When I first started using essential oils, I was drawn to them to help support my son who had struggled with digestive intolerances for many years. Supporting him with natural plant power has been a game changer for our whole family.

 

Today, my family use essential oils in many different ways to maintain overall digestive health, so I’ve put together 10 simple but powerful ways you can do the same:

 

1 – Add essential oils to your drinking water

One of the easiest ways to ease digestion throughout the day is by adding 1 – 2 drops of essential oils to your drinking water. I like to use lemon for a refreshing drink, or DigestZen before meals to support digestion.

 

2 – Rub DigestZen on stomach to soothe and ease digestion

Rubbing 1 – 2 drops of DigestZen with a carrier oil onto the stomach is a natural way to ease digestion before meals, or after a long lazy lunch! Keep it nearby for the whole family to use.  We do this daily to promote great digestive functioning.

 

3 – Support a healthy gut at home by diffusing essential oils

Diffusing oils aromatically is one of the most popular ways to enjoy these natural gifts from the earth! Try diffusing a few drops of DigestZen or a combination of Lemon, Lavender and Peppermint to provide a relaxing atmosphere for a happy gut.

 

4 – Take a daily veggie capsule to support your digestive health

Adding 1 – 2 drops of Oregano, Peppermint or DigestZen to a veggie capsule may help to reduce bloating, gas, and occasional indigestion. Taking your essential oil veggie capsules daily is a wonderful way to maintain a healthy digestive system and support healthy immune function.  This is great for the Adults of the house.

 

5 – Cook up a storm

I love to get creative with my essential oils in the kitchen! One of the easiest ways to use the oils for the whole family, is through cooking. Add 1 drop of oregano to your favourite Italian meals, or use Peppermint in your chocolate treats. While you’re enjoying some delicious food, you’ll also get the benefits of easing digestion and supporting your gut through the essential oils.

 

6 – Put the pep back in your step with peppermint

If you’ve overeaten and your digestion is slowing you down, try rubbing 1 – 2 drops of peppermint oil with a carrier oil onto your stomach in a circular motion. Peppermint is a wonderful tummy calmer and can support you by easing bloating and gas. It’s one of the most popular essential oils for good reason!

 

7 – Stay calm while you travel with Ginger

On the road or in the air and feeling a little uneasy in the stomach? Ginger oil can help to reduce occasional travel nausea – it’s the perfect travel companion! Add 1 – 2 drops into your water to help ease any discomfort. You may like to add a few drops to your hands and inhale to help you relax and feel supported.

 

8 – Support your gut on long haul flights

I always pack Ginger and DigestZen with me when I’m flying – especially on long haul flights! Being in the air and eating plane food isn’t always the best environment for a happy gut. You can either inhale these beautiful oils or take them internally by adding 1 – 2 drops with water before and after your meals.

 

9 – A healthy gut = a happier mood

While your oils are maintaining your overall digestive health, you may also feel happier, calmer and more at ease. Bringing essential oils into your daily routine can support you in feeling less stressed and more inspired, they are wonderful mood supporters, and it all starts in your gut!

 

10 – Keep your tummy calm amongst a jam packed schedule

Busy day ahead? Your stomach can suffer if you’re running around, chasing the kids and grabbing something less than healthy to eat. Pack DigestZen in your bag as your go-to oil when you need to soothe an upset tummy.
